Meeting with Bivdu

Jan-Erik Henriksen and Ida Hydle participated in an extraordinary annual meeting of the Sámi fishing organisation Bivdu on 2 March 2026. Bivdu is a non-profit and politically independent nationwide industry organisation, their goal is to safeguard the interests of everyone living in coastal Sámi areas regarding their rights to harvest and use marine resources in their local areas.

Jan-Erik Henriksen and Ida Hydle joined Bivdu and the Sør-Varanger Coastal Salmon Fishers’ Association when they started as researchers in the BIRGEJUPMI project. Several fishing organisations work to protect coastal Sámi fishing interests and rights, such as the two organisations mentioned.

Our researchers maintain good contact with the leaders of both organisations and update each other on various occasions – as an example of mutual co-research. This applies not only to salmon, but both organisations have a broader aim that involves a more overarching systemic understanding of how salmon, whether we are talking about Atlantic salmon or pink salmon, fits into a much larger interconnected system. Ocean, fjord, river, landscape, quotas, fishing gear, predators, industry, food, and sustainability are interconnected as part of a greater whole. In this way, both organisations are part of what also forms the foundation of the BIRGEJUPMI project.

At the meeting with Bivdu on 2 March, the focus was on establishing a supervisory committee for Bivdu’s board and organisation, which is very positive and increases visibility, advisory capacity, and activity. Jan-Erik was elected to the supervisory committee, along with a small group of fishers from various locations. The meeting participants were spread out along the entire Finnmark coast.

In June 2025, Bivdu organised also a major stockfish conference in Mehamn, that our WP2 members participated in.
