Summary

As part of Birgejupmi’s Work Package 3, project member Wasiq Silan (National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan) organised a student engagement presentation at the National Dong Hwa University to share the experiences from the participation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s First Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and other provisions related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (CBD SB8J-1) held in Panama city. She worked together with the Indigenous-led community-based Millet Ark Initiative and curated a variety of topics together with Millet Ark team to familiarise students with Indigenous artistic perspective in viewing and representing, international participation, geopolitical and cultural contestation as well as unity in diversity.

The presentation began with the blessing and prayer from the Millet mama and Tayal elder Pagung Tomi. Indigenous youth and activists Kalesekes Culuq, Batu Yubay and Vava Isingkaunan also contributed in the presentation, as well as MA student in museology Tze-Wei Huang. The presentation touched upon our visit to the Kuna community and how Indigenous knowledge may play a crucial role in biodiversity issues, as well as how peer-to-peer Indigenous exchange and solidarity matter to deepen the connection and impact.
Wasiq Silan joined Tayal elder Pagung Tomi and co-researcher Yih-Ren Lin to the Indigenous Television in Taiwan. They shared their experiences of the trip to Panama’s SB8J meeting and why it was meaningful. You can watch the clip here.
