Summary

Researchers from WP4 of the BIRGEJUPMI project—Stephan Dudeck, Thora Herrmann, and Ilaria Sartini—recently conducted preliminary fieldwork in Eastern Finnmark, Norway. Visiting communities such as Unjárga, Varangerbotn, Berlevåg, Kongsfjord, Tana, Vardø, and Vestre Jakobselv, they explored local perspectives on climate change and sustainability. The fieldwork aimed to prepare for an upcoming workshop where young people will share their visions for sustainable futures and inclusive environmental decision-making.

WP 4 started with fieldwork in Eastern Finnmark

The work package 4 “Local and global futures: young people’s visions of sustainable livelihoods and inclusive environmental decision-making” is starting this summer and us researchers Stephan Dudeck (University of Tartu), Thora Herrmann (University of Oulu),  and Ilaria Sartini (Research Institute for Sustainability at GFZ) just came back from a preliminary fieldwork in Easter Finnmark, Norway. We were welcomed by the beautiful colours of this season, the nice weather and the enthusiasm and kindness of the people we met in Unjárga, Varangerbotn, Berlevåg, Kongsfjord, Tana, Vardø, and Vestre Jakobselv.

One of the steps of the project is to organize a workshop where young people discuss their visions about the future in relation to climate change, climate change mitigation measures and their impact at the local level. That is why, to prepare the workshop with our colleagues from Unjárga, it was important to us that we -who do not live there- also tried to better understand the pressing topics in the communities of North Varanger.
