Stories from the Past, Visions for the Future: “Tre stammers møte” in Dyrøy

What happens when history, local knowledge, young voices and visions for the future come together? On 25–26 June 2026, Dyrøy/Divrrát/Tyras became a place for dialogue about Sámi, Kven and Norwegian histories, reconciliation and the future of northern communities.

At the UiT Seminar during Riddu Riđđu 2026, researchers, fishers, activists discussed the urgent question: What does it mean to be Indigenous salmon peoples when the salmon, rivers, and seas that sustain culture and livelihoods are under threat? Ida Hydle (WP5) participated as panellist.

At the Riddu Riđđu Festival Ida Hydle presented insights from BIRGEJUPMI fieldwork during a panel discussion on Indigenous river peoples, river rights and international cooperation. The session highlighted challenges facing Atlantic salmon, Sámi fishing cultures and Arctic ecosystems.

From Workshop to Community: The Sharing Exhibition Event in Unjárga/Nesseby

In June 2026, the Saami Council and RIFS organised a sharing event and exhibition in Unjárga/Nesseby, Sápmi. The event celebrated young people’s visions of sustainable futures, developed through Work Package 4.

We warmly congratulate BIRGEJUPMI researcher Nina Hermansen on her promotion to Associate Professor in Social Studies at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. In BIRGEJUPMI, Nina contributes to research on sea- and landscapes as living archives, community well-being, and Arctic coastal futures.
